Updated: Mar 22

Vacation time offers the perfect chance to break away from routine and embrace new experiences. For those who crave excitement and physical challenge, adventure sports provide a thrilling way to explore new destinations. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced enthusiast, adventure sports can add unforgettable moments to your trip. This guide highlights some of the most exciting adventure sports you can try on your next vacation, with practical tips and examples to help you choose the right activity.

Collage of adventure activities: indoor water park, desert biking, scuba diving, zip-lining, paragliding over ocean, white-water rafting.

Over the years, our family has evolved from casual campers into adrenaline-seeking adventurers! As our kids have grown, along with their stamina, we’ve shifted from staying inside the campground to exploring the hidden gems of our surrounding area. We’ve learned that packing our itinerary with local sports and outdoor activities doesn't just fill the time; it makes every destination more meaningful, thrilling, and unforgettable.

Zip Lining Through Forest Canopies

Zip lining offers a thrilling ride above treetops, often through rainforests or mountainous areas. It’s a fast and fun way to see the landscape from a new angle.

  • What to expect: Expect a thrilling, yet beginner-friendly adventure where professional guides handle the safety checks—providing all harnesses and helmets—so you can focus on the fun of moving from tree to tree on a series of breathtaking ziplines.

  • Why it’s great: Elevate your glamping experience with a custom treetop zip-line adventure that blends high-octane fun with unrivaled panoramic views. Accessible to most ages, it’s the ultimate way to experience the canopy.

White Water Rafting and Kayaking

White-water rafting and kayaking are among the most popular adventure sports for travelers seeking a combination of adrenaline and nature. These activities involve navigating fast-flowing rivers of varying difficulty, from gentle rapids to challenging torrents.

Where to try for Beginners (Class I-III):

Intermediate (Class III-IV):

Advanced (Class IV-V):

  • What to expect: Prepare for an exhilarating adventure where you will get wet and work as a team, making basic swimming skills and a sense of adventure essential. Guided tours typically provide all safety gear—like life jackets and helmets—along with expert instruction to ensure a fun, safe ride through both calm waters and exciting rapids.

  • Why it’s great: Pairing the rugged thrill of whitewater rafting or kayaking with a cozy glamping stay offers the ultimate 'adventure-meets-luxury' balance, allowing you to conquer wild, rushing rivers by day and unwind in creature-comfort luxury by night—the perfect recipe for an unforgettable, rejuvenating escape into nature.

Paragliding Over Scenic Landscapes

Paragliding offers a unique perspective on your vacation destination by allowing you to soar like a bird. This sport involves launching from a hill or mountain and gliding through the air with a fabric wing.

  • What to expect: Paragliding offers a serene, bird's-eye view of landscapes, feeling more like floating than falling. Tandem flights with certified instructors make it safe and accessible for beginners, requiring only a few running steps at takeoff before you sit back in a comfortable harness to enjoy the panoramic, silent flight.

  • Why it’s great: Combine the cozy immersion of a glamping retreat with the soaring freedom of paragliding for the ultimate blend of serenity and thrill—a bird's-eye view of breathtaking landscapes in quiet tranquility.

Mountain Biking on Rugged Trails

Mountain biking combines speed, skill, and endurance on off-road trails. It’s a great way to explore rugged terrain and cover more ground than hiking.

  • What to expect: Rugged mountain biking is for everyone, offering diverse trails—from scenic, easy dirt paths to expert, heart-pounding descents. No need to bring your own gear; local rental shops have bikes and safety equipment covered.

  • Why it’s great: Experience the thrill of tackling challenging terrain, then retreat to a cozy, curated sanctuary. This pairing of rugged biking and luxury glamping offers an exhilarating escape that fuels your adventurous spirit while delivering total relaxation.

Scuba Diving and Snorkeling in Vibrant Waters

Exploring underwater worlds is a must for adventure seekers who love marine life. Scuba diving and snorkeling reveal coral reefs, colorful fish, and sometimes shipwrecks.

  • What to expect: Whether you are a beginner looking to explore the surface or a certified diver seeking deeper thrills, the ocean offers a calm, serene escape with high-quality gear usually provided by local operators. Non-swimmers and beginners can easily start with snorkeling or take an introductory "Discover Scuba Diving" course to breathe underwater with an instructor, while certified divers can present their cards for boat trips to dramatic, deeper reefs. Regardless of your skill level, ensure a safe, relaxing experience by prioritizing safety: equalize your ears, breathe continuously, and follow the instructor's guidance at all times.

  • Why it’s great: Swap the forest’s rustle for the ocean’s meditative silence. Diving offers a weightless, vibrant escape, serving as the perfect, tranquil contrast to a peaceful glamping stay. It is an immersive journey into hidden worlds—both profoundly calming and thrillingly alive.

Rock Climbing on Natural Formations

Rock climbing challenges your strength, balance, and problem-solving skills. Climbing natural rock formations adds an element of adventure and connection with the environment.

  • What to expect: Transitioning from gym to crag is an incredible thrill, but natural rock demands a new level of respect. Beginners should absolutely hire a certified guide or take a professional outdoor class to learn proper anchor systems and safety protocols. Always climb with a helmet, use UIAA-certified gear, and prioritize safety over summits, as rock climbing outdoors carries inherent risks not found in a controlled gym environment.

  • Why it’s great: Turn the great outdoors into your playground. Experience the adrenaline of climbing, followed by a cozy, restorative retreat. It’s the ultimate active getaway, offering confidence-boosting challenges and breathtaking top-tier views..

Tips for Choosing the Right Adventure Sport

Choosing the right adventure sport is the difference between an exhilarating highlight and a costly mistake; matching the activity to your personal limits ensures you spend your energy on the thrill rather than the struggle. When selecting an adventure sport for your vacation, consider these factors:

  • Skill level: Ensure the activity fits your experience level to avoid fatigue or discouragement.

  • Physical fitness: Some sports require more strength and endurance than others.

  • Safety: Opt for certified instructors and guided tours, especially when trying something new.

  • Location: Choose sports tailored to the local environment and available facilities with good equipment.

  • Personal interests: Think about what excites you most—water, air, land, or climbing.

Your Glamping adventure doesn't have to stop at the campground boundary. If you have active kids and a thirst for adventure, we encourage you to pack your itinerary with local thrill-seeking. Whether you paddle through rapids, glide through the sky, or dive beneath the waves, hike that peak, or try zip-lining, it makes the trip unforgettable. Don't let your stamina go to waste just sitting by the fire. Pack your gear, find those hidden local spots, and turn your next vacation into an adrenaline-filled story. The open road, and the thrill is waiting!

Happy Glamping!

A lot of spectacular areas.

I used to live in Draper, Utah and would watch the paragliders take off from Point of Rocks. It was cool to see so many of them at once flying around.

Many of the walking/biking trails in Utah are spectacular too. I've been on some of the "Rail Trails" on my mountain bike with my little wagon in tow and the dogs enjoying the breeze.

Thank you for all of the wonderful ideas in so many areas.

By the way, up in Washington State on Interstate 90 at exit 32 I believe, you can get to Rattlesnake Ridge. That is quite the hike to the top but then you are absolutely rewarded with a view…
